10. Kahuna

You’ve probably heard the phrase “Big Kahuna” before. A Kahuna is a Hawaiian priest or magician. It’s also used for referring to an expert in any profession. “The Duke is the Big Kahuna of surfing.”

09. Keiki

A keiki is a kid. “Bring your little keiki to the beach barbecue.”

08. Mauka and Makai

Mauka means toward the mountains and makai means toward the ocean. They are terms used for directional purposes. “How do I get to Safeway?” “Head makau on Kapahulu.”

07. Pau

Pau means done, or finished. It’s usually yelled, “Pau!”

Wahine is both the Hawaiian and Maori term for woman. “Check out that beautiful wahine.”

Kokua means help. It’s also a yearly music festival held by Jack Johnson to help raise funds and awareness for environmental issues.

Ono means delicious and is used when referring to food. “This Ahi is so ono!”
